Germany‘s unemployment rate fell by 0.1 percent in July, the Federal Labour Office said.

The number of jobless Germans dropped by 42 thousand to 4.8 million, but without seasonal adjustments, including summer breaks in job training and jobseeker holidays, it grew by 68 thousand and is close to a post-war record. Unemployment is projected to rise by 370 thousand by year end, according to German research institute IAB.

Labour-market problems remain the main issue of the Bundestag election campaign. Chancellor Schröder’s government is blamed for the failure of his social policy reform known as Hartz IV and growing unemployment. In recent polls the ruling Social Democrats (SPD) got 27 percent of the vote whilst the opposition Christian Democrats got 44 percent.

On Friday, former Irish footballer Liam Miller died aged 36, his first professional club Celtic FC said. The Scottish club tweeted, “Everyone at Celtic FC is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former midfielder Liam Miller. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time. RIP Liam, YNWA.” According to reports in November, Miller was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

The Irish international joined Celtic at the age of sixteen, making his professional debut in 2000. He spent four years at the Glasgow club, and won the Scottish Premiership title in 2004. He then moved to English club Manchester United on a free transfer in 2004 under Sir Alex Ferguson’s management; the same year he made his international debut for the Republic. Miller was briefly with Leeds United on loan, before moving to Sunderland AFC, Queens Park Rangers, and then Hibernian F.C. Liam Miller also played in Australia for Perth Glory, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City FC, before playing for his hometown club Cork City FC, and moving to the US to play for Wilmington Hammerheads.

Internationally, he had featured in 21 matches from 2004 to 2009. He retired in 2016 after a spell at Wilmington Hammerheads. His former international teammate Kevin Kilbane said, “Sad hearing the awful news that Liam Miller has passed away this evening, taken far too soon by a terrible disease. Proud to have shared a dressing room with him over the years.”

The Canadian film industry’s major awards night, the Genie Awards, takes place on Monday. The Genie Awards begun in 1949 as the Canadian Film Awards, and current nominations include the films L’Âge des ténèbres, Away from Her, Continental, un film sans fusil, Eastern Promises, and Shake Hands With the Devil.

Notably absent from the nominations is the film Juno, an Academy Award nominee for Best Picture. Most of the lead actors in Eastern Promises and Away from Her were not Canadian, and Eastern Promises was filmed overseas. The leads of Juno, in comparison, are all Canadian, and the movie was filmed in the country, despite the financial backing for the film being from an American source.

The CRTC is the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, a communications authority like the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States, Independent Television Commission (ITC) in the UK (excluding Wales), and the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued proposed calorie labeling rules requiring most retail food vendors to display the calorie counts in items on their menus and menu boards. The proposed rules, issued Friday and expected to be finalized in 2012, would apply to most restaurants, snack bars, vending machines, coffee shops, drive-through restaurants, and convenience and grocery stores.

The US Congress required the rules in the health-care reform law passed in 2010. The rules proposed by the FDA must undergo a public comment period before they are finalized and take effect, said Michael R. Taylor, Deputy Director for Foods at the FDA.

The proposed regulations pertain to businesses devoting more than 50 percent of their floor space to the sale of food or that consider themselves restaurants, specifically food-selling chains with at least 20 stores nationally. Included are candy stores, bakeries, and ice-cream parlors.

The FDA’s proposed guidelines specify that chains post the calorie counts of foods and drinks on menus and menu boards or next to the food item, such as at a salad bar. The menu is to prominently exhibit the calorie content of each item in a way customers can see easily, giving them the same information packaged foods prepared at home currently provide. The information must be displayed in “clear and conspicuous” print and colors.

Many cities and states have passed laws requiring calorie labeling on menus, beginning with New York City in 2008. California implemented a similar law in January, although many counties are waiting for the release of the federal guidelines before they begin enforcement. Some fast-food chains there, such as McDonald’s and Starbucks, are displaying calorie counts on menus in some of their stores.

The rules are intended to curb the national obesity epidemic since, according to FDA estimates, one third of the calories people consume yearly come from food eaten out. In a statement issued yesterday, Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services said, “Giving consumers clear nutritional information makes it easier for them to choose healthier options that can help fight obesity and make us all healthier.”

Excluded from the rules are businesses whose primary product is not food sales but that sell it, such as bowling alleys, airports and airplanes, amusement parks, hotels and movie theaters. Alcohol is also excluded.

Caloundra, Queensland —Wikinews attended a roller derby event at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium on Australia’s Sunshine Coast on Saturday. The event, entitled Winter Whackdown, featured the hosting association — the Coastal Assassins Roller Derby (CARD) — fielding two teams, the Toowoomba Range Renegades and the Brisbane City Rollers Punk Blockers.

Upon arrival, the spectators were still filing into the stadium.

The opening bout between the CARD Ace Invaders and the Toowoomba Range Renegades started around 5:15pm local time (0715 UTC). The Range Renegades won 263 points to 90.

The second bout between the CARD Blood Diamonds and the Brisbane City Rollers Punk Blockers started around 7:30pm (0930 UTC). The Punk Blockers won 215 points to 127.
