Voters in California, Florida and Arizona voted on Tuesday to ban gay marriage, bringing about a victory for conservatives on a day which did not bring many conservative wins.

Meanwhile, voters in Colorado, South Dakota and California voted on measures which would have restricted abortion in those states. In Massachusetts and Michigan, voters passed measures that loosen marijuana laws. Finally, in the state of Washington a measure was passed that allows physician-assisted suicide.

The California ballot measure, Proposition 8, overturns the recent June ruling by the California State Supreme Court in the case In re Marriage Cases which reversed a 1977 statute passed by the California State Legislature and a 2000 ballot measure, Proposition 22, which also banned same-sex marriage by defining marriage as between a man and a woman. The wording of Proposition 8 is identical to Proposition 22. It was noted that many of the African-Americans and Latinos who cast their votes for Obama, also voted for the measure. The measure passed at 52% to 48%.

Lesbian comedian Ellen DeGeneres noted, “This morning, when it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had. I was saddened beyond belief. Here we just had a giant step toward equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away.”

Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen.

Singer Melissa Etheridge, who is also a lesbian, stated that she would no longer pay taxes due to the passing of Proposition 8, announcing in a blog post, “Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen.”

Also in California, voters rejected a measure which would require parental notification for a minor to receive an abortion. The measure was rejected with the same percentage as Proposition 8, 52% to 48%. Meanwhile in Colorado, voters rejected a measure that would define life as beginning at conception. While the measure did not specifically mention abortion it would have required legislators and courts to confront legal rights for fetuses – effectively preventing abortion. The measure was defeated in a wide margin, 73% to 27%

In South Dakota, voters also defeated an anti-abortion measure which would have outlawed abortion in all cases except in the case of rape, incest or if the mother’s health was in serious question. If passed, the law would most likely have been challenged as unconstitutional.

In Michigan, voters approved a measure which legalizes medical marijuana. Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, voters approved a ballot question that decriminalizes possession of small amounts of marijuana in which the possession of an ounce or less would be punishable by a $100 fine. The measure will also require minors under the age 18 to participate in and complete a drug awareness program and do community service. Failure to do so, would net the minor a $1,000 fine.

“Tonight’s results represent a sea change. Voters have spectacularly rejected eight years of the most intense government war on marijuana since the days of ‘Reefer Madness,'” said Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project. “The people were ahead of the politicians on this issue; they recognize and want a more sensible approach to our marijuana policy,” said Whitney Taylor, the chair of Committee for Sensible Marijuana Policy, which backed the Massachusetts proposition.

Also, in Massachusetts, voters overwhelmingly, in every single Massachusetts city and town, rejected a ballot measure which would have eliminated the state income tax by 2010, the ballot measure was sponsored by the Committee for Small Government, which is headed up by two libertarians, Michael Cloud, a Libertarian Party candidate for U.S. Senate in 2002 and Carla Howell, Libertarian Party candidate for governor in the 2002 Massachusetts gubernatorial election.

The last time the income tax elimination measure was on the ballot was in 2002, where it was defeated, narrowly by 45.3%. This stunned supporters of the income tax, who mounted a fierce campaign against the measure this time warning Massachusetts residents that repealing the income tax would have drastic effects on the state’s finances, leading to cuts in services, education and local aid.

Finally, voters passed a question which bans dog racing in Massachusetts, which will lead to the closure of Massachusetts’ two greyhound racing tracks, Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park and Wonderland Greyhound Park.

The campaign against dog racing was headed up by the Committee to Protect Dogs and endorsed by GREY2K USA and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals along with other animal protection organizations who claimed that dog racing was inhumane as the dogs were stuffed into cramped cages and endured injuries. The measure was opposed by the park owners including George Carney who owns the Rayham-Taunton park and Charles Sarkis, a restaurateur who owns Wonderland.

“We did it. We did it for the dogs,” said Carey Thiel, executive director of GREY2K USA. “For 75 years, greyhounds in our state have endured terrible confinement and suffered serious injuries. We’re better than that,” Thiel added.

One campaign supporter, Sandy Bigelow noted, “It means everything. We’ve worked so hard for the dogs and they heard us. It feels so good. Oh, God, it feels so good.”

George Carney said of the results, “It’s not a very pleasant thing right now. Some of these people have been here 40 years. Here’s a company that did nothing wrong, paid their federal taxes on time, paid the town on time. The town is going to be a severe loser, and a lot of people here dedicated their life to the company.”

We did it. We did it for the dogs.

Both sides used emotionally-charged advertisements, the anti-racing side showing “sad-eyed greyhounds,” while the pro-racing side highlighted the workers who would be out of work when the tracks close.

Both measures must now come before the Massachusetts Governor’s Council for approval.

A ballot initiative approved by voters in the north-western state of Washington will make it the second state to permit physician-assisted suicide. Initiative 1000 follows the ten-year-old example of the Death With Dignity Act of neighboring Oregon, and will allow physicians to prescribe a lethal dose of medication for a terminally ill patient to administer themselves. It was approved by a margin of 16%, and the ‘Yes’ campaign outspent the ‘No’ campaign by more than three-to-one. The law comes into effect in 2009.

Giving wall clocks as unique gifts can be one way of surprising your friends with something they wouldn’t expect from you – or how about an outdoor clock? Very few homes dont already have a clock, but it can still be a wonderful gift if you make the right choice. Here are some ideas how your choice of clock can be a surprising and very welcome gift to your friends or relatives.

Beautiful Eye-Catching Wall Clocks

It is obvious that you have a vast range of wall clocks to choose from, so here is just a selection of the more unusual or eye-catching clocks that might interest you as a unique gift:

A rouge wall clock has a bright red mirrored face with silver hands and dash marks, and will stand out in any room, but particularly one decorated in a modern style. So too would a sleek metal silver-red clock, again with a red face and red and silver hands and certain to draw the attention of your visitors.

Alternatively, if you prefer back and white, you can find a fabulous clock online with a silver metal case, and black Roman numerals around the edge, but what makes this so interesting is that the working gears are in full view. It is not a totally ‘naked clock’, but one that offers a mix of style, functionality and a view of how it operates.

There is an almost unlimited selection of wall clocks online, but one of the most worthwhile is the so-called ‘Blink’ clock that benefits the “Foundation Fighting Blindness” when you buy it. With a 12 inch matte white dial, and black hour and minute hands, the hours are set in Braille round the perimeter. It is sturdy and not upset by blind hands seeking the time. If you have blind people in your family, or even those whose sight is waning, then this is an ideal clock to offer as gift this Holiday period.

Functional Outdoor Clocks

Contrary to what most people believe, outdoor clocks are not dull and boring, but can be exciting and very colorful, and also add a touch of class to your home. Most can be used both indoors and outdoors, and are very easily mounted.

One example is a traditional metallic black and white outdoor clock with an open dial, and at 24 inches diameter, this is a substantial clock. With its black double outside rim and Roman numerals arranged like spokes, it looks just like an old-style car wheel. Although it can be used indoors it is designed for outdoor use and will resist wind, rain and snow, and is very reliable. This is just one example of the type of outdoor clocks that are available online right now, but there are others.

An alternative design for outdoor clocks is a double-sided clock with a metal and iron glass-fronted case. With the clock on one side and a thermometer on the other, you can determine both the time and the ambient temperature in your garden. This would look great in any garden or backyard and is totally weatherproof. An alternative is a bright silver solar-powered clock that can be used in the home or in your garden. In addition to the main clock face, it has two smaller dials each side of 6 o’clock displaying temperature and relative humidity.

Desk Clocks and Weather Stations

These are just two examples of the fabulous outdoor clocks that are available for you to purchase online, and that generally come with guarantees and warranties. There are many other types of wall clocks available online, although you may prefer to buy your friends or relatives a desk clock combined with a weather station rather than a wall clock.

Many dont know their friends well enough to be able to choose a wall clock, since such clocks must often fit in with existing home dcor. In such cases you have the option of desk clocks that also double up as weather stations, providing temperature, humidity and even a barometer indicating atmospheric pressure and predicted general weather conditions.

Desk weather stations come in many different forms, although it would be hard to resist a geometric split-screen design featuring Bedol’s geometric mosaic weather station with a barometer that indicates atmospheric pressure. This provides accurate forecasting of the weather for the next few hours. Add to that temperature, humidity, time, date, alarm with snooze and you have a fabulous gift for anybody’s office, lounge, kitchen or bedroom.

Giving wall clocks as a unique gift involves a lot more than most believe and some of the products available online today are absolutely magnificent. You can now give an outdoor clock as a unique gift without feeling embarrassed because such instruments are not only accurate, but are currently regarded as very acceptable gifts.

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started. The fire erupted on the 17th floor and spread quickly to the two floors above and engulfed the three floors below. The aerial ladders belonging to the Fire Service and Civil Defence reached as high as the 13th floor of the 21-storey building.

Videos have been sent to the United States (US) for examination to assist in determining the cause of the fire and to help in the damage assessment. Experts from the US are expected to arrive soon.

Firefighters were brought to the rooftop of the 20-storey tower by helicopter. The only fatality in this operation was Baki Billa, a firefighter of Bashundhara City firefighting department, who fell when climbing down a rope from a helicopter to the roof of the building. Three other firefighters made the transition safely. At this same time, the chief security officer was safely rescued by the Bangladesh Air Force helicopter, a Bell 212. Six security officers of the complex also lost their lives.

Larry Robinson resigned as coach of the New Jersey Devils on Monday afternoon because of stress-related health issues. Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello will take over the coach position temporarily until the new coach would be brought “as soon as possible”.

“Stress is a killer,” Mr. Robinson said during the announcement. “I lost a dear brother last year and that changed my thoughts about life a lot. My parents are no longer around. I want to be able to enjoy my kids. I worked and I played for 20 years so I could give everything I wasn’t able to have for myself to my children, and they suffered for my absence.”

Robinson, who coached Devils to 2000 Stanley Cup championship and 2001 Stanley Cup Finals, returned to coach the Devils last July after Pat Burns was diagnosed with cancer.

“A lot of things were getting to me. I want this team to be successful, but if I can’t be at my best and it’s bothering me healthwise, I can’t do that,” Robinson said.

Robinson’s resignation is the second NHL coaching change this season, following Eddie Olczyk’s dismissal by the Pittsburgh Penguins last week.

54-year-old Robinson missed 2 games this month with flu and sinus problems, he said that he already underwent tests, including an CAT test because of continuing “horrible headaches”.

One of the major enemies of roofs is snow. Unlike rain, snow has properties that can damage roofing material. While most roofs are designed to efficiently handle water, snow is a different type of entity that can wreak havoc on roofs. These are some of the reasons why you need to have snow removed from your roof.

A major reason why Snow Removal in Neenah is needed is because of the weight of snow. Unlike rain, snow does not run off into the gutters. Instead, it continues to build up on the roof. If the temperature remains below freezing, those piles will never melt. Eventually, the weight can cause the roof to collapse. If your roof supports have been weakened for some reason, this collapse can happen without warning.

Temperature changes in the winter can cause snow to melt and refreeze. If some of the melted snow gets under the shingles, the subsequent freezing temperatures will cause that water to expand. This will create enough force under the shingles to potentially damage them. Often, this type of damage isn’t identifiable until after most of the snow and ice has melted. If this occurs in a lot of different areas, the roof may have to be replaced.

Safety is another reason you need snow removal in Neenah. Snow that is piled up on the roof is unpredictable. At some point, it will come down. It can come down with the slam of a door or just because the weight has become too much to hold it on the roof. That snow can also take down any icicles that have formed in the gutters with it. This can be very dangerous for those who happen to be standing under the roof line. Potential injuries can be avoided if the snow is removed on a regular basis.

Unlike rain, snow is a more solid substance. It has weight. This weight can cause the roof to come crashing down or fall on some unsuspecting family member. If you suspect that your snow build up is becoming a problem, contact Motto & Sons Construction to have, it removed from your roof.

If your air conditioning system is older than 10 years it is not running as efficiently as you need it to be. It also uses more energy than the newer models and probably does not have an energy saving thermostat system. Buying a new air conditioning system requires the homeowner to know what kind of unit their home requires, and you can help with this.

Many advances have been made in the technology of air conditioning systems to filter the air in a home, control humidity and assist with helping minimize the effect of other health problems. Companies that sell air conditioners have engineers who can come out to your home and make an engineering recommendation on what unit you should buy.

These are skilled and trained technicians who check your vent system for air handling capability, and they will calculate the best energy saving unit for your home. They will study the position your home sets on the lot, and the home’s insulation. The engineer will recommend the most energy efficient unit for your air distribution needs. He will also run a load calculation on your home to help recommend the size of the unit which would best serve your needs.

Every unit is now Energy Star rated which is an energy efficiency rating. The higher the efficiency rating, the greater the energy savings will be. The Air conditioning replacement in Palm Harbor has technicians and engineers to help you select the most efficient unit. The energy rating is measured as a SEER rating of 13 or above. Using the proper SEER rating is important because too low will not cool properly and too high is also not effective.

The new system will create more comfort in your home for less energy costs, and you can control the operation of the system to work on a schedule that reduces the cooling when you are not at home. Air conditioning replacement in Palm Harbor has technicians who can ensure the air flow will be improved and the cooling will be better with a system which has been designed for your home. Saving energy is important and when you can achieve better cooling while reducing your energy bill you will have made a significant difference in the quality of life in your home. Airprompt Heating and Air Conditioning Inc. can help you with a system which is perfect for you.
