Wikinews interviewed author Marc Headley about his new book Blown for Good, and asked him about life inside the international headquarters of Scientology known as “Gold Base“, located in Gilman Hot Springs near Hemet, California. Headley joined the organization at age seven when his mother became a member, and worked at Scientology’s international management headquarters for several years before leaving in 2005.

Negotiating for Your Long Term Care Insurance Premium

by

Merian Eksteen

If you followed the 3 in 4 Need More campaign for long term care (LTC), you would ve learned something from elder care specialist, Dr. Marion Somers, who said long term care insurance premiums are actually what people negotiate for. So it s time to drop the idea that long term care insurance (LTCI) is only for the wealthy.

By studying the nature of LTCI you will you realize that this type of product is not for the rich because anyone earning more than half a million a year can naturally afford to cover his LTC expenses. LTCI policies are designed for middle-class Americans who could experience financial difficulties someday when they begin to require care. Many average families, however, are hesitant to inquire about a potential policy because they might be influenced into buying even though they are not sure that they can maintain the product s annual premium.

Every year, the number of uninsured individuals goes up and the reason behind this is not because no one cares about his future health care anymore. Everybody actually does care but ongoing reports of increasing LTCI premium rates make them feel hopeless. Some of these uninsured folks are thinking of turning to Medicaid for help while others say they still have their families to support them. Unfortunately, Medicaid only provides limited coverage while one s family has only so much to give before their nest egg dries up.

Anyone is capable of getting the best LTC someday if he starts planning for it today via LTCI. Contacting a licensed LTCI agent who is well-versed in the LTC industry is a good idea as he can show the ropes.

Keeping Long Term Care Insurance Premiums Affordable

LTCI specialists have a common advice to the public and this is to purchase their LTCI policies at an early age. These professionals are aware that most people are postponing their policies thinking that this will spare them from years of expensive premium. Unfortunately, applying for a policy 10 years before actually requiring care will cost more as insurance companies will naturally increase the premium of those individuals who are at risk of immediate care.

Insurance companies allow younger applicants more leeway to negotiate for a lower premium rate because these firms are much aware that they won t be dealing with benefit claims anytime soon. However, it s not enough to secure a cheap policy without giving any attention to what is stipulated on it. It is always best to seek guidance from an LTCI specialist given the fact that a wide range of policies with unique features are being sold in the market. A person who has never had any experience in the LTCI industry would definitely need orientation from an expert.

Policy buyers should learn how to compute their maximum benefit amount, maximum benefit period, as well as how to determine their elimination period and inflation protection rate among others, as all these things will affect their coverage and its annual premium.

There continues to be issues on long term care insurance premiums but these should not affect people, not to mention discourage them from planning their future. If they allow negative reports or rather hearsays get into their system they could end up facing a financial disaster.

Two passenger trains collided in India early on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people and injuring more than twenty others, reports have said. The accident occurred at around 05.30 local time (00.00 UTC), when a passenger train collided with another train which was waiting at a red signal near the northern city of Agra.

Both the trains were in the final leg of their journey at the time of the collision. They were heading to the capital, New Delhi, which is about 200 kilometers north of the accident site.

Passengers said that they were sleeping when they felt a heavy jolt. One eyewitness told television crews that people on the upper berths of the train came tumbling down due to the impact: “We felt a massive jolt. People sleeping on upper berths fell to the floor.”

“There was a loud bang and we were suddenly thrown out of our seats. There was panic everywhere,” another passenger recounted.

A northern railway spokesman, R. D. Vajpayee, told the Voice of America news agency that the rear coach of the stationary train bore the brunt of the collision’s impact. “We had to rescue, take out the passengers which were trapped in the last coach. And, gas cutters were used, and we had called the army also. They had assisted us and, within a few hours, we had completed with rescue operations.”

An unnamed eyewitness told the CNN-IBN news agency that “there are many people who are injured and many people who are dead. A lot of people fell onto the tracks because of the impact of the collision.”

Railway officials said they are not certain what caused the accident, but one of the trains may have overlooked a signal to stop. An inquiry into the incident has been ordered.

Trains are the most popular mode of long-distance travel in India. India operates one of the most extensive and busiest rail networks in the world; 9,000 passenger trains run every day, carrying more than eighty million people daily across the country. There are about 300 rail accidents in the country every year, prompting calls for improving safety standards on the rail network. Earlier this month, one person was killed when a train derailed. In February, another train accident in eastern India claimed sixteen lives.

To create a harmonious atmosphere in your home, follow the rules of feng shui living room.

Even small changes can help to restore balance and peace. Soon you may feel the positive Qi energy flowing around and improving your life.

The feng shui living room needs to have a healthy stream of Qi, which is achievable. How can this be achieved? Start with the basics – look around your living room carefully, including the chairs, couches, sofas, tables, paintings, flowers, pillows and decor items. See how these objects are located; try to get an intuitive feel as to what may be improved.

Create a space: if your room is full of furniture, try to free up space. Rely on your intuition and get rid of unnecessary items. The less trash the freer the Qi.

Relocate seating: chairs, sofas, and couches should face the door. The idea is simple – a person sitting in the living room should see the door. If all the furniture is moved to the walls, try to rearrange the furniture in an octagon or a semicircle. Move chairs and sofas located in front of windows or directly in front of the door, as they impede the flow of energy that circulates between the door and windows.

Illuminate corners: free the dark corners of the room. Darkness can blunt the Qi flow. Place lamps in dark corners – they bring good fortune, harmony and peace. You can also place flowers with round leaves (in pots) or hang mirrors in the corners. The flow of good energy tends to avoid dark corners, and you need to do your best to achieve a free flow. Remove any dried out plants – they can become a source of negative energy.

Freshen up the walls: hang a happy family photograph or a picture with a large beautiful tree on the western wall, and your family can grow stronger. In order to advance in your career, hang a picture of a waterfall or a lake on the northern wall.

The fireplace: feng shui recommends having a fireplace in the center of the feng shui living room, as it stimulates and increases happiness and provides a good energy flow.

The balance of Yin and Yang: if you have a lot of high things, add a few low ones. If your carpet has bright colors, use cushions in soft shades. Watch the balance of the horizontal/vertical objects, and the hard/soft objects to balance the yin and yang in the room.

Mirrors: mirrors are very good for the feng shui living room. However, you need to make sure that the mirrors do not reflect the bathroom, stairs or kitchen. Do not place a mirror directly opposite the door; otherwise the mirror can reflect the Qi back.

Aquariums: movement of fish will help to create good energy. For good luck, place the aquarium on the north side of the room. The size of the aquarium doesn’t matter. Remember that placing a large aquarium with a large fireplace can make these two strong elements interfere with each other. In this case, replace a large aquarium with a small one.

Across Easter weekend Wellington, New Zealand was host to Rock2Wgtn, an international two-day hard rock festival. Large crowds showed up at Westpac Stadium to see the various acts. The world has never seen an event of this kind before, and New Zealand has never had any kind of major rock festival or multi-day music festival.

Day one featured three theatrical acts. Finnish band Lordi, known for their monster costumes, opened the night. They were followed by the US shock rocker Alice Cooper, whose themed set included the horror theatrics regularly associated with him and a hanging stunt he recently restarted after a gallows collapse nearly killed him two decades ago. The night was headlined by the distinctively costumed band KISS, complete with their famed black-and-white makeup.

The first major act on the stage on day two was the American hard rock/glam metal band Poison. After Poison, British act Whitesnake took to the stage and performed their set to the crowd. British-born American rocker Ozzy Osbourne, who, as well as a solo career, fronts the world-famous Black Sabbath, was the second night’s headline act.

The festival’s entertainment did not stop at the six main acts. There was also support performances from three New Zealand bands – The Symphony of Screams, The Valves and Sonic Altar. Their sets were accompanied by a special effects package from award-winning studio Weta Workshops, who are known for their work on movies such as The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. This came in the form of ‘Drusila the Dragon’, which rose up to a height of six foot and wigspan and moved for the audience, shining lasers from its eyes and breathing red smoke. Flame Fire Productions were hired to put on a fire show featuring several dancers alongside the performers. Also performing were six local guitarists and a group of ‘zombie‘ cheerleaders.

Wikinews was able to secure two exclusive interviews with those responsible behind the scenes for putting on such a show. Weta Workshop’s Philip Sharpe, who supervised the project and Milly Bea, current manageress of Flame Fire Productions, discussed their roles. In the first installment, Milly Bea tells us about “a definite highlight” for Flame and lets us know everything from her thoughts on Gene Simmons’s tongue to just how much kerosene it takes to put on a fire show at a rock fest.

This article mentions that Wi-Fi stands for “Wireless Fidelity”, although this is disputed.

A Florida man is being charged with 3rd degree felony for logging into a private Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) Internet access point without permission. Benjamin Smith III, 41, is set for a pre-trial hearing this month in the first case of its kind in the United States.

This kind of activity occurs frequently, but often goes undetected by the owners of these wireless access points (WAPs). Unauthorized users range from casual Web browsers, to users sending e-mails, to users involved in pornography or even illegal endeavours.

According to Richard Dinon, owner of the WAP Smith allegedly broke into, Smith was using a laptop in an automobile while parked outside Dinon’s residence.

There are many steps an owner of one of these access points can take to secure them from outside users. Dinon reportedly knew how to take these steps, but had not bothered because his “neighbors are older.”

There are now over 9 million passengers using Glasgow airport every year. This high traffic comes with a few problems including high parking costs. Finding online Glasgow Airport parking discount codes can be a hard task.

However, when the airport opened 50 years ago on the 2nd of May 1966, it only had a handful of airlines operating there. That means the number of people using the airport was low and so it can be rightly assumed that finding the best deals for Glasgow Airport parking was easy at the time.

The city initially had one airport at Renfrew. But with the surge of commercial flights that came in the 1960s, it became apparent that the existing airport couldn’t handle the traffic. Glasgow Corporation chose the former airbase at Abbotsinch as the city’s new Airport.

According to Prof Dugald Cameron, author of a book on the history of Glasgow airport and who took part in a commemorative flight, the airport that was situated at Renfrew couldn’t handle any expansion during the rapid development of air travel.

He said: “The airport was expanded to twice its size on two occasions during the second world war. This was done to cope with the demands of the war. The airport was so constrained in terms of size that further development was simply impossible. The reality of the situation became clear when larger and more space-demanding planes began to be built. It was just too small.

The terminal building at Renfrew Airport, which was designed by Sir William Kinnimonth in 1954 was torn down after the airport’s closure in 1966.

Loganair airline, Icelandair, and Aer Lingus were the earliest airlines to operate at Glasgow airport. They have been present through the years consistently in its 50 years of existence, a period which has seen general growth in the airline industry.

Scott Grier, who is a former chairman at Loganair Airline said: “From day one, we have always been the resident airline at Glasgow Airport. We started operations at Renfrew Aerodrome before moving there. There’s nothing we haven’t seen.

He went on to say: “Before just a few years ago, we were operating from one of the last two hangars from World War 2 before they got bulldozed.”

Passenger traffic at Glasgow airport is expected to reach record levels this year. Travellers can only hope there will be a corresponding expansion in parking spaces for them to have more Glasgow airport park and ride discounts.

“The airport has been an important part of Scottish life and economy. Few people are aware that the airport is only 50 years old,” said Amanda McMillan, who is the current CEO.

“Glasgow airport only started with just 3 operating airlines. Today, there are over 30 covering more than 110 destinations all over the world,” she said.

The increased traffic means it is now a good idea to book in advance if you want online Glasgow Airport parking discount codes

9 million people use the airport every year, but Ms McMillan expects to see the highest number of passengers in the 50th anniversary year. There are indications that the traffic will go up to 10 million or more. This surge in traffic might make getting online Glasgow Airport Parking discount codes a little harder.

Rocket company SpaceX, notorious for repeatedly pre-announcing its first flight on Wikinews, cancels its latest attempt and defers further flights until 2006.

This latest launch attempt on the 19th December was cancelled due to structural issues with the first-stage fuel tank of the Falcon 1 rocket. An electrical fault caused a valve to shut inappropriately, and as fuel drained out a vacuum was created causing the side of the fuel tank to buckle inwards.

Citing violations of its policy regarding “Marine mammal items”, eBay terminated an online listing on Monday by the town of Cape St. George, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, for a 40 ft (12 m) sperm whale carcass reportedly beached upon its shores about a week prior.

With an initial asking price of 99 cents, bidding for the carcass reportedly rose to C$238.03 within 15 bids. Reports variously state the final price of the whale, prior to the removal of the listing from the auction site on Monday at about 2:30pm, was C$2,025 or C$2,075. Listed in eBay’s “really weird” category, the carcass was considered by eBay to be an example of “items made from marine mammals regardless of when the product was made”, which are prohibited as per site rules.

Following a council meeting on Sunday in the town of 950 residents, Cape St. George’s mayor, Peter Fenwick, put the whale up on the auction site in a bid to have it removed from the town’s premises, citing a lack of cooperation from provincial and federal government officials on the matter. “It’s your problem, you solve it”, Fenwick recounted to The Globe and Mail (TGaM) as the response he received from them. Apart from eBay, Kijiji was also suggested as another avenue by which to sell the carcass.

Fenwick told CTV News, several years prior another sperm whale measuring 15 ft was beached in the area, but disappeared without incident, an act Fenwick attributed to be the work of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. “This time”, he remarked, “the authorities have told us that it’s our whale, it’s our responsibility to get rid of it.”

On putting the carcass for sale, Fenwick remarked, “We knew we had to do something with it and this seemed to be the least expensive way of disposing of it.” In a news release, Fenwick highlighted a possible use for the carcass, particularly its bones. “The 40 foot sperm whale will make a spectacular exhibit once the fat and muscle is removed, and the town is asking museums and other organizations that could use a whale skeleton to contact the town for further details.”

On retaining the whale himself, Fenwick stated, “As a town we would dearly love to keep the whale and put it on exhibit in the town but the cost of such a venture would be hard to justify.” Fenwick told TGaM the whale was “in half decent shape”. “This one looks like it died very recently and hasn’t decomposed much”, which Fenwick suggested elsewhere was due to the whale’s present location, partially submerged in near-freezing water. However, Fenwick noted its close proximity to a residential area, saying homeowners who lived there were “very interested in seeing the whale gone.”

eBay was not the only organization who barred the sale from taking place. “We also got threatened by the federal department of the environment, and told to pull the ad off or they would prosecute us”, said Fenwick on the opposition he said he received from Environment Canada, which viewed the sale as contravening a federal act designed to protect endangered species. “I received a call from the federal department of the environment saying that you’re not allowed to sell any parts of sperm whales, even if they’re dead.” he added. “So I said, ‘Oh that’s very good, I’m glad to hear that, now can you send somebody over here to get rid of it for us?'” Fenwick’s request was met with a negative response from Environment Canada.

“They’ve got to sort it out somehow. The uncertainty means it just sort of sits there and rots.” Once decomposition sets in, Fenwick remarked the carcass would become a “real nuisance”. “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a whale that’s been rotting on the beach for a couple of months — actually sometimes you can’t see it for the clouds of flies around it — but you can smell it for about a mile”, he added.

On finding alternate means to dispose of the carcass, Wayne Ledwell, a member of Newfoundland’s Whale Release and Strandings, suggested the whale be towed out to a remote area. “They need to do that right away, when they come in and they’re fresh,” said Ledwell. “No one wants to go touch them … everything becomes gooey and slippery and you can’t stand up on the whale and it gets on your boots and you can’t get the smell off and then you go home and the dog rolls in it and you get it in your kitchen and you curse the whales, and you curse the government and … it becomes a mess.” Fenwick said they’d considered the idea, enlisting a local fisherman who, however, judged his engine too small for the job.

Previously, blue whale carcasses washed ashore in the towns of Trout River and Rocky Harbour, located about 150 km further north, and were taken by Royal Ontario Museum for preservation of the skeletons. Fenwick suggested the sperm whale carcass in his town might also meet a similar fate, as the sperm whale’s status as the largest toothed whale might prove to be a drawing attraction for such a facility.

Regarding what he plans to do next with the carcass, Fenwick said “If we’re not allowed to sell it, we’re willing to drop our 99 cent price down to a zero.” He said he hoped some eBay bidder stays interested in the whale. “We’ll be glad to talk to them about giving them the whale. We’re hoping that’s not illegal.” He also said he hoped the publicity from the town’s predicament, which garnered national attention, and its unusual means of finding a solution, would draw in someone interested in taking the whale off his hands at their own expense.

Should the whale fall under new ownership, Fenwick advised it be moved away from the town to a beach devoid of people, and the blubber left as food for seagulls, insects, and other predators. He estimated “It’ll probably take a year or so to get down to the skeleton.” As monetary gain was reportedly not what the town cared about, Fenwick was willing to offer the carcass for free, though one report noted money raised from the listing could have gone towards the building of a skate park.

The listing on eBay, as put up by Fenwick, read:

This 40 foot sperm whale rolled up on the beach last week. The actual seller is the town of Cape St. George which is responsible for disposing of it before it starts to decay. Once the fat and flesh is removed you have a spectacular 40 foot skeleton of the largest toothed whale in the world, great for museums and other attractions. To prevent it rotting in the town it can be towed to isolated beaches on the Port au Port Peninsula to allow the seagulls and other birds to remove the flesh. Call 709-644-2290 or 709-649-7070 for more details.

Please note the successful bidder will have to remove the whale within 30 days
