Following a period of steady intensification, Hurricane Bill is now a Category 4 major hurricane, as defined by the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.

Bill formed on August 12 and became the 2009 season’s first hurricane on August 17. For the past few days, the storm has been moving toward the west-northwest, but that is expected to change later this week as it turns more toward the north. After that, its track is uncertain, though National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasters believe the hurricane will pass between Bermuda and the United States.

As of 11 a.m. AST August 19 (0900 UTC August 19), Hurricane Bill was located within 15 nautical miles of 18.0°N 54.9°W, about 460 mi (740 km) east of the Leeward Islands. Maximum sustained winds were near 115 knots (135 mph, 215 km/h), with stronger gusts. Forecasters estimate the storm’s minimum barometric pressure at 950 millibars.

Bermuda could be under the most significant threat from Bill, and officials there have been monitoring the storm’s progress. Derrick Binns, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing, reported that “We have been following the storm closely since its inception, and today we reviewed our planning and procedures to ensure all are in sync. While we have not as yet issued hurricane warnings, I think it is important to advise residents to check their emergency kits to be sure supplies are adequate.”

…[it is] almost inevitable that the storm will find some part of Eastern Canada. Whether that’s the marine areas or the land district, it’s still too far to say.

Bill is expected to spare the United States from any significant impact, but forecasters advise that since the storm is still several days away, nothing is certain. Indeed, residents of Long Island, New York are keeping a close eye on the cyclone’s progress.

Forecasters also warn that Bill could target parts of eastern Canada. Residents of Nova Scotia, mindful of the extensive damage from Hurricane Juan several years prior, are beginning to take precautionary measures.

Regardless of its exact track, Bill will likely generate rough surf and dangerous rip tides along the coast of the U.S. and Canada.

Tropical cyclones are known to be unpredictable, so interests in the regions potentially in Bill’s path are urged to track the storm’s progress over coming days and review emergency plans.

An undercover investigation by Naperville, Illinois law enforcement has led to the arrest last Thursday of four people allegedly involved in prostitution. The stings came after police received tips that people were using websites like Craigslist and Backpage.com to sell sexual performances in Naperville hotels.

Patricia H. Scoleri of Naperville was arrested after an unidentified neighbor observed consistently suspicious activity at Scoleri’s home. Traffic was unusually heavy and consisted mostly of luxury cars in an otherwise quiet, middle-class neighborhood. Also, the visitors were mainly middle-aged men, and an odd string of lavender-colored lights were hung on the front window.

Police say Scoleri worked alone. She was arrested at 2 p.m. local time (2000 UTC) and is charged with violation of anti-prostitution laws, anti-cannabis laws, and the Massage Licensing Act. She apparently has four children, but the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has neither contacted her nor received a police report on her.

The second sting occurred at 5:30 p.m the same day (2330 UTC) and resulted in the arrest of Chicago resident Tonya M. Adams. She is charged with prostitution and driving without a license. Another sting about an hour later resulted in the arrests of Jessica M. Walley, a Skokie resident, and Mark A. Williams, a self-admitted Schaumburg gang member. “Walley was charged with prostitution and unlawful possession of cannabis. Williams was charged with pimping, obstructing a peace officer, driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance,” reports WBBM News Radio 780.

All four suspects are free, having paid the required ten percent of their $1,000 bail. They may face additional charges related to crack cocaine discovered during the police investigation. Arraignment is scheduled for next month at the DuPage County Circuit Courthouse in Wheaton.

Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher together with F1 racer Sebastian Vettel won the Nations Cup for Germany at the Race of Champions on Tuesday. The event was held at the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing, China.

The winning duo beat the Brittish team of the new Formula One world champion Jenson Button and three-time World Touring Car champion Andy Priaulx.

The individual contest was won by Mattias Ekstrom, former DTM champion, who defeated Schumacher on Wednesday.

Red Bull driver Vettel also won the FIA Formula One 2009 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix earlier on November 1st at Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton was overtaken by Vettel after his first pit stop and then was forced to return to the pits soon after and quit the race after suffering a brakes problem.

Vettel’s teammate and winner of the previous Grand Prix Mark Webber came second and the current season champion Jenson Button won the third place on the podium for Brawn GP after pushing Webber very hard on the dying laps of the race with a gap of about half a second at the finish line.

There is only one step we can make for the team ranking, for the constructors, as well as for the drivers’ championship, for myself. So there is no question about the target.

Rubens Barrichello was able to mantain 4th place, having been overtaken only by his teammate Button.

Nick Heidfeld took fifth in BMW ‘s final race. Both Toyota cars of Kamui Kobayashi and Jarno Trulli also drove the full race to finish on the back of Heidfeld. Sébastien Buemi closed the top eight for Toro Rosso.

Thus, Sebastian Vettel took the second place in the championship from Barrichello at the finale of 2009 season. Vettel claimed he will aim to become a champion next year. “There is only one step we can make for the team ranking, for the constructors, as well as for the drivers’ championship, for myself. So there is no question about the target,” Vettel said after the race.

On Monday, June 2, the Danish embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, was attacked with a car bomb. The bomb went off in the parking lot of the embassy at around 12:10 pm (UTC+5), killing at least six and wounding at least 30 others. One Danish citizen was killed.

“I think we can say with a reasonable degree of confidence that it was a suicide attack,” said Tariq Pervez, the director-general of the Pakistani Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The bomb forced the closure of the Danish embassy, as well as those of Norway and the Netherlands, which were nearby.

I urge and incite every Muslim who can harm Denmark to do so in support of the prophet

While no group has claimed responsibility, the Danish national security intelligence agency PET has concluded that al-Qaeda was behind the attack. “Extremists can be inspired by the attack in Pakistan,” said PET’s director, Jakob Scharf in a statement.

“We are just trying to find any clue, any evidence,” Pakistani investigator Muhammad Mustafa said to the Associated Press. “You know yesterday it was panic here. Usually we miss important things in panic.”

“Samples have been sent to the laboratory to determine what type of explosive was used,” said Mohammad Ashraf Shah, who is in charge of the investigation. Investigators have found that the car with the bomb was a Toyota Corolla, which bore diplomatic license plates.

“One can of course only condemn it, it’s terrible that terrorists commit such acts,” said Per Stig Møller, the Foreign Minister of Denmark, on TV 2 television.

“It was to be expected that they would do something,” said Ikram Sehgal to Reuters, referring to Ayman al-Zawahiri‘s recent video encouraging attacks against Denmark over the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy.

“I urge and incite every Muslim who can harm Denmark to do so in support of the prophet, God’s peace and prayers be upon him, and in defense of his honorable stature,” Ayman al-Zawahri said in a video which became public on April 21.

“This attack was not linked to any event in the country or the region, rather it was part of widespread outrage throughout the Islamic world against publishing blasphemous caricatures,” a local official told Daily Times, adding that it would not affect Pakistani negotiations with “local” Taliban, which is considered separate from the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Denunciations of corruption, bribe, collection of bribes from refugees [1] and of sexual scandal involving the peacekeepers [2], [3] threaten the Organization of the United Nations (UN).

The gravest denunciations involve the aid project to Iraq, called Oil-for-Food. Grave denunciations of bribe exist, superfluous accounting and collaboration with the ex-dictator Saddam Hussein, against staff of the UN, companies and politicians of several countries. Even the secretary of the UN, Kofi Annan was suspicious of participation in the plan of corruption. And also grave doubts still hover about his son, Kojo Annan.

The gravity of the denunciations threatens not only the credibility of the UN, but its existence.

Secretary Kofi Annan said that he is going to promote reforms in the organization. [4]

Architecture is war. War is architecture. I am at war with my time, with history, with all authority that resides in fixed and frightened forms.

Lebbeus Woods dedicated his manifesto pamphlet War and Architecture, Rat I Arhitektura to the Bosnian capital in 1993. To read it is to immerse yourself in an ethic which is also a poetics of Romanticism: an architect, a constructor of worlds, a sensualist who worships the flesh, the melody, a silhouette against the darkening sky. Sarajevo, 1992, “architecture resisting change, even as it flows from it, struggling to crystallize and be eternal, even as it is broken and scattered…”.The American architect and critic’s idea is that the physical and existential remains of the destruction in Sarajevo should be preserved as a habitat for new organisms that will live among the ruins of a war which so many people – Westerners, do-gooders, hard-liners – have been forgotten, avoided or erased from memory. These organisms will inhabit the scars of war like parasites, leave wounds open, courageously accept the pain of the present, the recent past, the dead. The forms he imagines are anything but attractive. He designs huge insects, uses the words of animal life and of sickness: the scar, the scab. Acceptance of the scar is an acceptance of existence. Lebbeus Woods was a war correspondent in Bosnia for the Japanese architecture magazine a+u, a voluntary architect-on-the-spot.Many of his ideas are for cities: Berlin, Paris, Zagreb, Sarajevo. He formulates neither local development schemes nor permanent visions, and suggests neither window-dressing nor facelifts nor plastic surgery. He networks o lifestyles, ways of relating to what is, infiltrations of the raw materials of human existence. One recurrent structure or anti-invariance in Woods’ architecture is Freespace. Freespace embodies a new conception of space and a new form of knowledge-through-action open to wide individual interpretation and individual invention. This is open, undefined space used randomly and meaninglessly. Electronically equipped, constantly changing space that makes a difficult habitat for people seeking shelter and domesticity. Space for people in crisis who are always prepared to make a new start. Free-Zone-Berlin is a typical example: in order to encourage the networking of autonomous individuals, free of monumentalised institutions of culture and in the name of revitalising the true, unseen culture of Berlin, the center of the city is declared a Free-Zone and a network of Freespaces is established. In Berlin, Freespaces are carved from the inside out in existing buildings, remodeling the neutral, predictable Cartesian grid into a new, ambiguous order. In Zagreb helicopters position Freespace structures in the streets. The architecture is mobile. Violence is done to the pre-established order, to what is given: you don’t walk on tiptoe in the slaughterhouse of freedom. In a consumer society the only recourse is to make one’s own work indigestible. Otherwise it will become the inevitable end-product of all processes of consumption: excrement.Architecture is a political act. Lebbeus Woods opposes establishment culture which is blind, or pretends to be blind, and uses power to protect itself. He opposes all ideology in order to go where transformations lead. Lebbeus Woods says any ideology is a betrayal. He introduces anarchy into architecture and speaks of an architecture: let people live how they want, where they want. Solohouse is a home for people who have chosen to live in solitude, in the company of sophisticated equipment which enables them to observe the world, including the one inside themselves. Lebbeus Woods quotes Schopenhauer: solitude is the last real test of an individual’s capacity for the Sublime, that intoxicating mixture of exultation and terror lifting the individual to his highest and most difficult thoughts and emotions. In Underground Berlin the architecture of experience carries the challenge below ground with structures immersed in the flux of magnetic, seismic and gravitational frequencies before resurfacing with the drama of a Francis Bacon painting, while in Aerial Paris architecture triumphs over gravity. Man is a gypsy suspended in the computerised nodes of an aerial network, free to choose between solitude and fellowship.Lebbeus Woods prefigures a new kind of order based on heterarchy, a term borrowed from cybernetics. Heterarchy lies outside hierarchy. He identifies the hierarchy of things with the hierarchy of social structures and institutions: a revolution in the latter begins with the elimination of the former.Lebbeus Woods sees architecture as an instrument of knowledge. Experimental: living is experimental. Paradoxical: it transcends the logic of its own construction. Self-referential: human existence is “about itself” more than it is about the world. He uses paradox as an antidote to constriction, against metaphysics of any kind. His drawings and writings belong to a utopian world. They are acts of political and existential condemnation expressed in the form of architecture. One utopian precedent is Archigram. Conditions have changed in thirty years, from the British group’s technological optimism to the American architect’s electronically-assisted existentialism. Both offer a different, non-standardising world, a projection of the future through images (comic strip, sci-fi), the belief that architecture has the capacity to transform. Lebbeus Woods writes: architecture must instigate streams and turbulences of its own, participating and not merely expressing. In 1963 Warren Chalk said: in a technological society more people will play an active part in determining their own individual environment, in self-determining a way of life.Woods is an independent voice, a Piranesian libertarian, a fellow-traveller of Michael Sorkin, Hani Rashid, Lise Anne Couture and a handful of other New York-based researchers, and is the most extreme, perhaps the most political of them all.He is much loved by students in the world’s more experimental, more aristocratic architecture schools (Cooper Union, Sci-Arc, Columbia) where he teaches but is ignored by the academic institutions all around us which are as moralistic as they are resistant to change, as reactionary as they are indifferent to the dramatic events happening under their very nose.

A public memorial for the victims of the plane crash that occurred last Saturday where the Polish president, Lech Kaczy?ski along several members of the Polish government died, was attended by 100,000 citizens of the country in Pilsudski Square of Warsaw.

A gigantic white platform having a giant cross across the centre was constructed in the area which had photos of the victims, including Maria Kaczy?ski, the first lady of Poland and many high ranking Polish officials. The names of the deceased were read, beginning with the president and his wife, as their only daughter, Marta and Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the twin brother of Lech Kaczy?ski and former prime minister of the country, looked on. Former President Lech Walesa, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and interim president Bronislaw Komorowski were also present. The audience held Polish flags held together with black ribbons and observed a two minute silence before emergency sirens and church bells rang out.

“Our world went crashing down for the second time at the same place,” acting President Komorowski said about the crash, which occurred near Russia’s Katyn forest, where thousands of Polish soldiers were killed during the second World War. Prime Minister Tusk called the crash “the greatest tragedy in Poland since the war.”

It marked the beginning of two days of ceremonies. A funeral Mass for the first couple will follow the memorial. The funeral will be held at St. John’s Cathedral at 6 p.m. local time (16:00 GMT) in Warsaw.

The coffins of Lech and Maria Kaczynski were taken to the St. John’s Cathedral for the evening Mass. They will be flown to Krakow Sunday morning for the state funeral, Presidential Palace spokesman Jacek Sasin stated.

“During those few days when the palace was open, some 180,000 people came through the palace” to pay their final respects, he said. Some of them waited for as much as 14 hours in the queue, he added. Teresa Winkler, 76, was one of the mourners who said that she came to pay respect to a President “who took care of the people forgotten by society,” such as aging soldiers and activists.

“He was a real patriot and a real Pole,” Winkler said. “I am afraid it will be hard to find another president like Kaczynski,” she noted. Several other groups came to honor the first couple for their work for the nation.

A state funeral for the first couple is slated to be held on Sunday; however, some world leaders canceled their plans to attend it. The principal cause for this was that several European airports remained closed, owing to volcanic ash that hovered in different parts of the continent.

Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and Finnish President Tarja Halonen canceled their plans to visit Warsaw for this reason. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sophia were also among those who canceled their trip. Heads of state of Egypt, Macedonia, India, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand and Pakistan also canceled their plans to attend the service on Sunday.

American President Barack Obama, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and French President Nicolas Sarkozy were still expected to arrive. Czech President Vaclav Klaus had stated that he would come to Krakow via train and car, while the presidents of Slovakia and Slovenia said they would arrive by car.

South Korean Prime Minister Chung Un-chan also canceled his plans to attend the state funeral while Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, was unable to travel from Rome to deliver a memorial Mass on Saturday.

The first couple, along with other Polish dignitaries, died when their plane went down in heavy fog after hitting the tops of trees on approach to Smolensk, Russia. They had been on their way to attend a memorial for thousands of Polish army officers who were killed in 1940 by the Soviet Union.
